Audrey Hepburn is my girl crush. I pretty much want to be Audrey.
Or settle for Audrey-eque clothes. Which isn’t really settling because fashion is one of the best parts about her.
The other best part about Audrey is the fact that she always brought poise and class to the silver screen. (She and Olivia deHavilland both. Audrey and Olivia are two of my heroines.) Audrey was dignified but not snobby, graceful not not stiff, and an overall “good girl” but not prudish. I don’t know how we moved from Hepburn to Hilton, but we definitely need more positive examples in our current celebrity culture.
(Give me a minute and I’ll think of at least one current celebrity that I really, really like as a person.)
The other, other best part about Audrey is her first movie, Roman Holiday. I fall in love with Gregory Peck every time I watch that movie! It is a true princess movie. And it has a surprising ending, too.
Which I won’t tell.
But I will tell you this: Audrey Hepburn plays the part of Princess Anne. At the beginning, it shows her traveling and making public appearences on behalf of the country and the royal family. She is doing a very good job, but later on it becomes apparent that she is feeling the strain and stress of being under such a strict schedule and travel regimen. Her doctor visits her and prescibes something to help her sleep. Still feeling the effects of her medication, she wakes up in the middle of the night and runs away. Gregory Peck plays the part of a journalist who meets her on the streets. He mistakes her for a common citizen who has had a little too much to drink, and he offers her a place to stay. He eventually figures out who she is, but decides to play along with her charade of being an ordinary person in the interest of getting a good story. And on it goes from there.
And Princess Anne has a true Roman Holiday.
